Pokemon Go Game Play:
You’ve probably played Pokemon GO before, but if you let the game fall down the road, get ready. Niantic has just given the game a great update.
With a combination of GPS tracking and some basic AR magic, the game allows players to venture into the real world to capture Pokémon wherever they go: their neighborhoods, schools, workplaces and even their own backyards.
I stopped playing almost immediately. Catching pocket monsters may be the essence of the franchise, but it’s only half the game. Pokemon is also a series about training, competition and battle, something that the Niantic mobile adventure offered very little of the asynchronous battles outside the gym.
Now, that is changing: the company has just updated the game to include “Coach Battles”, making the feature available to players who have reached level 10 or higher. In other words, you can finally fight directly against other players.
It may be the most anticipated update so far, but do not get too excited. After trying an early demonstration of the new combat system at the Niantic office in San Francisco, it’s hard not to find the results a bit disappointing. Not bad, but if you were among the players who expect Pokemon Go’s PVP to adopt the traditional turn-based battle system of the Pokémon main franchise, you’re not lucky.
Pokemon Go’s new PVP system will allow you to challenge other players in battles in real time between teams of three Pokémon, but it’s not a crazy departure from the existing combat system in the game. Coach battles are more of a multiplayer evolution of simplified combat based on the touch that is already used for gym and raid battles.
Still, Niantic has added some twists to the system to add more depth and strategy to the battles. Most battles will continue to consist of touching the screen repeatedly to activate the basic attack of your Pokémon, but now players can unlock up to two special attacks such as a solar ray or flamethrower for each Pokémon, which gives them more options in the battle.
There is also a “Protect Shield” mechanic that will allow players to block most damage for an incoming attack. Niantic told me that this was fundamental to the strategy of the new game mode: predict when your opponent could use his high damage charge attack and block it with your shield.
Starting battles is fortunately simple. Players can fight against the NPC team leaders of the game at any time, or engage in battles with other players by scanning QR codes or inviting a friend to a remote battle. There are also leagues that limit the CP level of Pokémon used, ensuring that teams at lower levels are not systematically destroyed by players at higher levels.
In practice, it’s actually quite a decent combat system for a game like Pokemon Go. The battles are fast and simple enough so that they do not occupy too much time for players who are in the wild, but they are not so simple that you can touch your screen without paying attention: know when to use protect or exchange For another Pokemon You can really change the course of a battle.
It is very much in line with what Pokemon Go already offers: simple and quick gaming experiences designed by experts for casual gaming. That’s not a bad thing, but it means that the new Trainer Battle system does not offer much for players looking for a slightly more complex Pokémon experience.
For players like me, who are hooked by the new Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee, casual, but more traditional, and looking for an excuse to immerse themselves in the mobile game, it’s a bit annoying. And if you do not play Pokemon Go, this is not the feature for you to start.
